Whether kids are in school or out for summer, Mary Cameron at the State Library of Iowa knows one concern for their parents is what kids will come across while they play online computer games and surf the Internet. She says one of the best things parents can do is sit down with kids and visit with them about the Internet, and also suggests not having the computer in the kid’s room. Cameron says the best “internet filter” is Mom, and she says kids won’t go looking for troublesome material on the web if the whole family can see what they’re doing on the computer. It should be set up out in a living room where everyone has access, and see what’s being done on the computer. While there’s a wealth of entertaining and educational material on the Internet, Cameron says parents do have the power to monitor a child’s use and what they see.
