Mike Lewis of Waterloo and Mark Anderson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, went head-to-head for the championship Sunday at Iowa’s only 72-hole amateur event at the Spencer Golf and Country Club.Like last year, Lewis pulled away at the end and won his second Northwest Amateur Golf Tournament. Lewis shot a final-round seven-under-par 65 during the 81st annual event, a round that consisted of five birdies, an eagle and no bogies. Anderson was within four strokes with four to play but on 16 hit two straight t-shots out of bounds and ended up taking an eight on the par-four hole. Anderson finished the round of 72 at minus-seven for the championship. But the story of the day was Mike Lewis. The 21-year-old University of Northern Iowa student birdied the first hole, and eagled the second to take the lead and never looked back. He shot a six-under-par 30 on the front to take a four-stroke advantage. Lewis becomes the first golfer to win consecutive Northwest Amateur events since 1985-86 when Mike Ketcham of Ottumwa pulled it off. Lewis will be a senior at UNI and says he might turn pro before next year’s tournament.
