An Iowan leaves this morning on a trade mission to Cuba, after a four-decade embargo on trading with that tropical nation has begun to ease. Paul Lang is with “Natural Products Incorporated” in Grinnell. He says this is the first-ever official trade show between Cuba and Iowa, a food and agribusiness exposition, and he says they’ve been asked to join Iowa’s economic-development department in showing off some of the state’s products. Lang’s firm makes soy products like egg and milk replacers, and bakery ingredients. There’s no guarantee of sales to come out of this, but Lang says it’s worth taking a look at the potential market for Iowa goods. He calls this “a fishing trip” because nobody knows what they’ll find but Cuba’s opened its doors to the American market so he hopes to make sales of Iowa soybean products. Lang says former president Clinton lifted the Cuban embargo on selling food and agribusiness products, and there are a lot of corporations that want that business. He says Natural Products will be right beside Iowa’s Wells Blue Bunny as well as national food marketers like Kraft and Kellogg. The delegation leaves tomorrow for Cuba.
