Governor Tom Vilsack questions a proposal that would close two of the state’s four mental health institutes. A committee appointed by the legislature to come up with 100-million dollars in state budget cuts is making that recommendation. Vilsack is from Mount Pleasant, where one of the state mental institutes is located. Vilsack says Representative Dave Heaton of Mount Pleasant, a Republican, also questions whether there’d be a great deal of savings from the closure of the mental health institutes. Lieutenant Governor Sally Pederson is heading a task force that’s examining the various treatment options in Iowa for the mentally ill, retarded and mentally disabled. Pederson says the group trying to re-design of the entire system.Pederson says it makes more sense to look at the issue from a comprehensive point of view.
