Two more Iowa National Guard units have been called to federal active duty as part of the war on terrorism. Guard spokesman, Colonel Robert King, says the 109th Medical Battalion of Iowa City, and the 1133rd Transportation Company based in Mason City have been mobilized.King says the soldiers will report to Mason City and Iowa City on Friday and leave for Fort Mc-Coy Wisconsin on Monday. King says when compared to being mobilized for Desert Storm 12 years ago, this is a very different “glide path” for the unit. There are about 170 soldiers in the Mason City unit which is a truck transportation company. He says they’ll take all their equipment when they leave and then will depart Wisconsin to their duty location — which he says is unknown. King says the 1133rd did a stellar job as the first Iowa-based National Guard unit to be called up for Desert Storm and will be expected to continue their leadership in this call-up.King says the 109th Medical Battalion has about 150 medical professionals and support staff.
