Students at some 300 colleges and high schools in the U-S participated in protests against the war in Iraq today. Some 150 people, mostly students, gathered on the campus of Grinnell College in Grinnell and laid on the ground. Student Ellen Gallagher, a senior from Albany, New York, says they wanted to make a visual statement in protest of the potential war by showing an example of the thousands of people that might die in a war. She believes they were successful. Gallagher says other schools in the state participated with various types of protests. Gallagher says events at other colleges and high schools across in Iowa included “teach-ins” and students walking out of classses to “raise their voices against the war.” Gallagher says there was someone at today’s protest that didn’t agree with their stance. There was one man who said he was for the war. She says she didn’t respond to him, but others did talk to him and explain why they’re against the war. Professors at Grinnell College will present poetry in English and Arabic.
