A former Iowa State University football player was killed in a car accident Wednesday. The I-S-U athletic department says 22-year-old Matt Grosserode , a walk-on fullback on the Cyclone football team the last three seasons, died Wednesday in a three-car accident in Ames. The identities and conditions of the people in the other vehicles are not available. Grosserode (Gross-road) redshirted during the 2000 season and was a squad member in 2001 and 2002. He was a native of Lincoln, Nebraska and was a two-year starter at tailback and linebacker at Pius X High School in Lincoln. During his prep career at Pius X, he played on a pair of state championship teams. Cyclone coach Dan McCarney had learned about the accident just prior to meeting with the media Wednesday. Grosserode, a prep teammate of all-Big 12 Iowa State offensive lineman Bob Montgomery, was a four-time member of the Big 12 Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll and an academic all-conference honoree.
