Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is calling for a “Great Promise” initiative at the federal level that would help more kids enroll in preschool programs.Edwards says he wants to expand Head Start over the next five years so that a million more children begin kindergarten, ready to learn. Edwards would spent three billion dollars over five years to accomplish that goal. Edwards says he wants to make sure highly-qualified teachers are leading the Head Start programs and that the kids get the nutrition and health care they need to be able to learn. In addition, he wants to expand Head Start to include more younger kids as Head Start today is for four year olds. Edwards is a North Carolina Senator. Candidate John Kerry is touting his “clean water” initiative this morning during an appearance in Davenport. Kerry has outlined his political philosophies in detail in a new book. Kerry’s book is titled “Call to Service” and he says it covers everything from foreign policy to issues like education and health care. Kerry also outlines his job creation ideas and business reforms he’d seek. Kerry says the “American worker is getting screwed by these powerful interests in Washington and we need a president who is willing to stand up to these interests.” Kerry is a Vietnam veteran who currently represents Massachusetts in the United States Senate.
