The black shirts downed the white shirts 38-3 as the Iowa Hawkeyes closed out spring drills on Saturday. Drew Tate and Jason Manson both look solid as they bid to replace Nathan Chandler at quarterback. Coach Kirk Ferentz says that battle along with several spots won’t be decided until August when the incoming freshmen can get a look. Ferentz says the defensive line will have some openings just due to the numbers, and they’ll need backups in the secondary. Ferentz says anything is really open right now, and says they take a couple of weeks in August to determine what they’ll do with the freshmen. Ferentz says he was pleased with spring practice and likes the potential of his team. He says it doesn’t matter right now, and they’ll know more after a couple of games. Ferentz says they plan on “being in the mix”, but says they’re not a top notch ballclub at this point.
