Republicans say they’ll review the latest offer democrat Governor Tom Vilsack has presented as a deal that could resurrect the Iowa Values state economic development fund Vilsack wants and do what republicans want by cutting business taxes and enacting regulatory reform. House Speaker Christopher Rants, a republican from Sioux City, spoke with Vilsack by phone yesterday afternoon.Rants says the governor made an attempt to compromise on tort reform, but Rants says the process Vilsack suggested for resolving disputes about the state law governing workers compensation wouldn’t work fast enough. Rants says the process should start Monday, if possible.Rants says “it’s something that we need to get sorted out now, and not just leave it for another day.” Rants says republican lawmakers are still reviewing Vilsack’s offer.Rants says republicans will put their heads together and come up with a response “in the near future.”
