Ottumwa residents aren’t falling into step with a plan by school leaders to remove the steps from in front of Ottumwa High School. Earlier this month, the board of education approved a recommendation from the school superintendent to remove the steps and to install new entry doors instead. The project, along with other upgrades, is expected to cost 477-thousand dollars to be paid for with a one-cent local option sales tax. A public hearing was held on the issue last month and virtually no one showed up. After the vote, residents began voicing opposition to the decision made by the board. A meeting is scheduled for Saturday in an effort to save the steps.
