Suspect in custody in missing C-R girl case, unidentified body found

Police have a suspect in custody in the disappearance of a ten-year-old eastern Iowa girl and the Amber Alert issued in the case has been canceled. Cedar Rapids police say a body has also been discovered in rural Johnson County, but police say they have not identified the body as that of the missing girl, Jetseta Gage of Cedar Rapids. The suspect, 37-year-old Roger Bentley, was apparently an acquaintance of the family of Gage. Bentley lived with his father in Brandon, a town of 300 people halfway between Cedar Rapids and Cedar Falls, and it was his father’s truck he was driving when the girl’s 7-year-old brother tells authorities Bentley took the girl last night. Bentley, who lived with his father in Brandon, is on the state’s sex-offender registry and was reportedly convicted ten years ago of lascivious acts with a girl under 13 in Benton County. Authorities who’d say only that they found Bentley in Johnson County were questioning him this afternoon about the missing girl’s whereabouts. A release from Cedar Rapids Police says the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the State D-C-I are investigating the discovery of the body, but it may be some time before they make a positive identification.
