Cedar Rapids police say the recent story of a dead dog has a new ending, though it’s still not a very happy one.

Late last month, a Cedar Rapids man found his St. Bernard puppy whimpering on his front steps. It was thought the dog had been badly beaten and a search was launched for several teenage suspects. The dog, named Apalo, died a few days later at a veterinarian’s office.

After talking with several witnesses, a necropsy was performed and now investigators say the dog had not been beaten and instead died after accidentally drinking anti-freeze.

More than $5500 was donated to the Cedar Rapids Crime Stoppers in the case, money that can now be returned unless donors call to say Crime Stoppers can keep the money.
