A Marine from Fort Dodge has been killed in the war in Iraq. Twenty-two-year old Sergeant Jon E. Bonnell, Junior, died Monday night when he stepped on an improvised explosive device.

According to Bonnell’s father, Jon Bonnell, Senior, his son was on foot looking for roadside bombs at the time in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. The Bonnell family was notified early Tuesday by the U.S. Defense Department of the death.

Bonnell was a member of B Battery, First Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment which is part of the First Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, California. He was on his second deployment to Iraq. Bonnell is a 2003 graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High School. He was also a pitcher and first baseman for the Dodgers baseball team. Funeral services are pending.
