Iowa State lost a heartbreaker in Lawrence last night. With one second to go in regulation, Ben McLemore of Kansas banked in a three-point shot to send the game to overtime.

“When it left his hand I said, ‘We got it,’ because it was so far to the left — and it somehow banks in and, you know, it’s such a disappointment. I mean, we had it. We’re right there and they just take it away,” Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said after the game on the Cyclone Radio Network. “But I can’t even explain to you how proud I am of our team. If we go out there and play with that kind of effort and that kind of poise and that kind of intensity, we’re going to be right up there at the top of the conference when this thing is all said and done.”

Sixth- ranked Kansas scored the first 11 points of the extra session to post a 97-89 victory in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

“Couldn’t be more proud of the guys,” Hoiberg said. “It’s just so unfortunate that we’re walking out of here 0-1 in league play.”

Melvin Ejim finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Iowa State’s over-all record now stands at 10-4.
