Governor tries to sort out caucus dates

October 4, 1999 By admin

Governor Vilsack talks by phone with New Hampshire’s Governor at two o’clockthis afternoon to discuss the Caucus Chaos. Last week, New Hampshire’sSecretary of State set that state’s primary for February 1st, the day afterIowa’s Caucuses. Vilsack says there’s a need to fix the mess quickly togive the system some sense of stability and keep Iowa and New Hampshirefirst in the nation. Iowa law requires the Caucuses to be eight days beforeany other state’s presidential contest. That would mean a date of January24th for the Iowa Caucuses if New Hampshire’s primary isn’t moved. Vilsackhopes to retain the January 31st date for Iowa’s contest.Political leaders from Iowa traveled to New Hampshire over the weekend, butgot no resolution to the problem.
