A foundation set up by the builder of the Great Northern Railway is donating $3 million to help fight poverty in one Iowa community that will be chosen later this year. The money from the Northwest Area Foundation of St. Paul, Minnesota, will be distributed through the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation. Foundation president Johnny Danos says the endowment funds will be used to experiment with programs to alleviate poverty in the chosen community. Danos doesn’t know when or how the city will be selected. Ten other states are getting similar grants for the same type of program.
