March 13, 2000 By admin

Republican legislators and the democrat Governor are clashing over plans for next year’s state budget. Governor Tom Vilsack has told his agency directors not to identify specific budget cuts for the Republicans. House Speaker Brent Siegrist, a republican from Council Bluffs, says Vilsack’s “gag order” is not helping.Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows says Republicans will pare Vilsack’s budget outline by 120-million dollars. If they don’t, taxes will have to go up, according to Iverson. Both republicans and the democrat Governor intend to develop state budget plans which expend over five BILLION dollars in the next fiscal year.
