Kids learn about government at the State Capitol

April 12, 2000 By admin

Seven-hundred-50 Iowa school kids from 37 schools are at the statehouse today for “Capitol Youth Day 2000.” During a noontime rally on the capitol steps, Secretary of State Chet Culver urged the kids to be politically active as he says they’re the future leaders.Culver organized the day, and urged the kids to talk with their legislators.Governor Tom Vilsack highlighted the story of Kurt Warner, the Iowa native who rose from Arena Football to the N-F-L’s Most Valuable Player and Super Bowl champion. He says no one believe in Warner and Warner proved them wrong by believing in himself and proving them wrong. Vilsack says many politicians don’t believe young people want to be involved in politics, and he wants the kids to prove them wrong. The students were given Iowa Student Political Action Committee placards, and given guided tours of the capitol.
