Wisconsin man arrested in Iowa after chase

May 22, 2001 By admin

A Wisconsin man is in the Cerro Gordo County Jail after a 20-mile, high-speed chase Monday afternoon. Eighteen-year-old Randolph Schmitz allegedly took a car from his employer in Superior, Wisconsin, and drove off without paying for 15-dollars worth of gas at the “Top of Iowa Welcome Center” near Northwood. The Iowa State Patrol says Schmitz was speeding at 95-miles an hour down Interstate-35 north of Mason City and sped up to 110-miles an hour after troopers began chasing him. Schmitz crossed the median near Thornton to head back north and surrendered shortly afterwards. He faces a variety of charges, including car theft, felony eluding, marijuana possession and drunk driving.
