It’s a big day at the Drake Relays

April 26, 2002 By admin

Competition continued at the Drake Relays today. Muscatine’s Aubrey Martin uncorked her winning toss of 46-feet-four-and-a-half inches to overtake leader Sheena James of Clinton and win the girls’ high school shot put. She says she was nervous the entire time. It’s not the first time Martin has won a big meet with her final attempt. She did the same thing at state last year and says she was lucky to compose herself to concentrate enough to get the winning throw again.Carroll’s Adam Huluska defended his title in the boys’ high school long jump with a winning leap of 23-feet and three-quarters of an inch. He says it was a good jump, even though he had more room on the board at takeoff. He says he had trouble getting proper placement on the board to shoot for a record.Clinton’s Stacy Boerema has the nation’s top high jump this season at six-feet. She did not approach that height this morning but cleared five-six to claim her first Drake Relay’s title. She says that’s been her goal for four years.Notre Dame’s Luke Watson reeled in Eastern Michigan’s national cross-country champion Boaz Chubawa as the Fighting Irish won their first four-mile relay since 1942.
