Anfinson denies new trial in baby’s death

July 3, 2002 By admin

A Des Moines woman found guilty of murdering her baby has lost a bid to get a new trial.Heidi Anfinson was found guilty of second-degree murder for killing her 15-day-old son. Baby Jacob was found tied to a rock in Saylorville Lake. Anfinson initially said the baby’d been kidnapped, then when confronted she said he drowned in the bathtub, she panicked and dumped the tiny body in the Lake. Anfinson asked for a new trial because she said her attorney should have pursued an insanity defense because she was suffering from severe post-partum depression. The Iowa Court of Appeals has rejected that argument, as well as Anfinson’s claim that she was inappropriately denied a lawyer early on when she was being interviewed by police. The Justices reviewed the transcripts, and found Anfinson only asked if she should get a lawyer, not that she wanted one present.
