Harkin has $2.6 million for ’08 re-election bid

July 10, 2007 By admin

In the past three months, Senator Tom Harkin raised about one million dollars for his 2008 re-election campaign.

Harkin now has more than $2.5 million in the bank for his bid to win a fifth term as a United States senator. "I plan to run my campaign as if I’m the Republican Party’s top target — and I always am," Harkin says.

A Cedar Rapids businessman has announced his intentions to seek the GOP’s nomination to face-off against Harkin, but Republican Congressman Steve King said last week he was considering a bid to unseat Harkin.

"As you know, I now hold the record — according to the Library of Congress — having defeated more sitting members of congress, Republicans, than anyone in U.S. history," Harkin says. "If Steve King runs, he’ll be tough. I’m sure he’ll be well-funded. (He) represents western Iowa, so that would be an energetic, tough race but, put it this way, I’m up for it."

Harkin has never faced anyone but a Republican congressman in his re-election campaigns for the senate.

Harkin made his comments during a telephone conference call with Iowa bloggers.
