State approves grants for trails, environmental and archeological projects

January 9, 2008 By admin

The state transportation commission has approved over five million dollars in funding for trail improvements, and environmental and archeological projects in the state. Stewart Anderson of the Iowa Department of Transportation talks about some of the grants.

He says $750,000 was awarded for the Ankeny to Woodward trail project, and a similar amount for the Racoon River Valley trail addition in Dallas County. On the scenic and environmental side, the city of Fairfield received a grant of $282,100 for some streetscaping work and Coon Rapids received $350,000 for some streetscaping work within the city. The Decorah trout run trail project also received $750,000.

There was also a grant issued for an archeological and historic project. He says $750,000 was awarded to continued development of the Iowa Transportation Museum in Grinnell. The commission also approved just over $119,000 for a cultural resources study of the Loess Hills and $336,000 for the Minburn Depot Restoration project.
