Burglary suspect is killed in northern Iowa crash

January 7, 2013 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A 50-year-old Thornton man died in a single-vehicle accident Sunday morning a short time after allegedly being involved in a burglary nearby.

Hancock County Sheriff Scott Dodd identifies the victim as Martin Cordes who died of injuries from the accident.

He says the accident took place northwest of Kanawha. Cordes was going eastbound, the passenger said tires entered the south ditch, turning the pickup truck over onto its top, a passerby discovered the vehicle.

Sheriff Dodd says personal property items found in the Cordes vehicle and at the accident scene were recovered and returned to the owner of a residence four miles west of the accident that had been burglarized immediately before the accident.

He says Cordes dog was in the vehicle during the accident but did not sustain any injuries.
