Drake women fall, UNI wins in MVC womens’ tourney

The Drake women fell to top seeded Wichita State 73-58 Friday in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Shockers scored 28 points off 20 Bulldog turnovers.

Three Drake players hit double figures, sophomores Liza Heap and Carly Grenfell had 11 points each and Junior Morgan Reid added 10 points. Drake won four out of its final eight games to finish the season at 11-19 overall and 5-13 in MVC in coach Jennie Branzyk’s first season.

The Bulldogs lost just one senior, Stephanie Running, from on this year’s team.

The UNI women pulled out to a 30-20 halftime lead over Indiana State in the second MVC tourney game. They went on to get the 71-60 win to advance to the semifinals tomorrow where they will meet Wichita State. Amber Kirschbaum led the Panthers with 23 points, followed by Jaqi Kalin who had 22.

UNI is now 16-15 on the season.
