While this week’s World Pork Expo is drawing much attention, even from President Bush, another big pig event is already underway in central Iowa. The International Pig Veterinary Society opened its biennial congress in Ames on Sunday. Tracy Raef, spokeswoman for the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, says the congress is expected to draw two thousand animal scientists, veterinarians, researchers and producers from 59 countries.Raef says it’s not a surprise that the banquet menus for the four-day conference at I-S-U contain a hefty helping of one particular product, every meal includes pork. Raef says participants are interest in supporting the industry.Tomorrow’s evening banquet alone includes 850 pounds of pork tenderloin, all of it Iowa-grown. This is the 17th of the association’s congresses, which are held every-other-year. It marks the first time the event has been held in the same city twice. Ames also hosted the congress in 1976.
