Drake unveils new look logo

July 26, 2005 By admin

Drake University today (Tuesday) unveiled a new look for the logo that serves as a symbol for the school’s sports teams and the school as a whole. Athletic Director Dave Blank says they felt it was time to update the bulldog and lettering that’s found on all sorts of Drake promotional items.(Blank is shown in the photo above in front of the new logo)

He says they wanted to get something that people would see and immediately says “that’s Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.” The new logo features a more modern looking bulldog that appears to be in mid run and it also replaces the block-style letters that spell out the schools name. Blank says the more modern looking “D” is important. He says the distinctive D is something that he personally wanted to be recognized as Drake. New logos often lead to increased sales of school merchandise as students and alums replace their old t-shirts and sweatshirts with the new ones. Blank isn’t sure how big an impact this new logo might have on sales. He says that’s something they’ll find out. He says they’ll try to track it and see how fans get on board with buying the new merchandise. The logo retains the traditional Drake blue, white and grey color schemes.
