Medical examiner’s report says Manchester couple shot to death

Autopsy results have been released in the case of a northeast Iowa teenager accused of killing his grandparents. The Delaware County Attorney says the Manchester couple found dead in their home Sunday afternoon were shot to death.

County attorney John Bernau revealed Wednesday afternoon that an autopsy shows Richard Sweet and his wife, Janet Sweet, died of gunshot wounds. Further details are not being released at this time, including the type of gun used in the killings and whether the gun was recovered.

The Sweet’s grandson, 17-year old Isaiah Sweet, is charged in their deaths and remains in custody at the Delaware County Jail. According to court documents, Sweet admitted to a female friend last Friday night that he drugged his grandparents and thought they were dead. He called her again the next morning to tell her he had killed them. Sweet allegedly admitted the killings to two others over the weekend as well.

Sheriff says Tama teen firefighter could be linked to more arson cases

Tama County Sheriff Dennis Kucera says more charges could be coming against a teenage volunteer firefighter. Investigators had believed a series of grass fires and fires that damaged three vacant buildings in Tama County were arson. The sheriff says they kept working to tie the fires to a suspect.

“Then Sunday night the latest one developed with witness information, actually witness information throughout all of these,  started to tied things together, connect the dots so to speak, and led to an individual we felt we should talk to,” Kucera says.

He says 18-year-old Justin Anderson of Tama is charged with seven counts of arson.

Kucera says Justin is the son of the long-time Tama Fire Chief, Ron Anderson, which was a surprise. “It’s very different, it’s obviously very unusual, very uncomfortable no doubt for the fire chief, the department, even for my investigators,” Kucera says. Kucera says he’s not sure what Justin Anderson’s motive was for setting the fires.

“I do not no that one was given to my officers at the time of the interview, or at the time of the arrest,” according to the Sheriff. Kucera says they are still investigating to see if other fires may be linked to Anderson.

“We are looking into possibilities, like I said it’s just a matter of looking at all the fire calls, all the information that we have, seeing if all the dots are gonna connect,” he says. Justin Anderson is a high school senior who is set to graduate this weekend.

Teenage firefighter charged with arson in Tama County

A young volunteer firefighter is facing arson charges for multiple fires across Tama County. A series of grass fires and fires that damaged three vacant buildings had baffled investigators for months.

They suspected arson, but were no doubt surprised to discover the person suspected of starting the fires is a volunteer firefighter in Tama. Eighteen-year-old Justin Anderson, a high school senior, has been charged with seven counts of arson. He’s the son of the long-time Tama Fire Chief, Ron Anderson.

The Tama County Sheriff’s office reports, even though the homes set on fire were vacant, Justin Anderson placed the lives of others, including his fellow firefighters, in danger.

Waterloo man accused of stealing historical items from museum

Authorities say they’ve caught the man responsible for stealing historical items from a museum in northeast Iowa. A 58-year old Waterloo man has been arrested and charged with theft for stealing some valuable artifacts from the Cedar Falls Historical Society.

David Arnold was charged with first degree theft after numerous artifacts were taken, including antique firearms, bayonets and clothing from the World War I and World War II eras. The value of the items was reported as over $13,000.

Last month, co-workers at the museum became suspicious when they saw Arnold mishandle some items at the facility. Police investigators later learned that Arnold had been keeping the stolen items at a Waterloo home, unbeknownst to the home owners.

They in turn helped police with the investigation and recovery effort. Arnold remains held in the Black Hawk County Jail.

Manchester teen makes first appearance on murder charges

A northeast Iowa teenager, accused in the weekend deaths of his grandparents, made his first court appearance this afternoon. Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Sweet was arrested last night in Cedar Rapids.

Reporter Mike Johnson was on hand for Sweet’s initial court appearance in Clayton County. He says Sweet was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. An arrest warrant filed Monday in Delaware County shows Sweet admitted to three people that he killed his grandparents over the weekend.

The bodies of 62-year-old Janet Sweet and 55-year-old Richard Sweet were found Sunday afternoon in their home in Manchester by relatives who arrived for a Mother’s Day gathering. Isaiah Sweet’s court appearance took place in Clayton County because a district judge was not available today in Delaware County.

Sweet’s bond was set at $1 million cash. District Judge Monica Ackley set a preliminary hearing for May 25th in Delaware County. Sweet is being transferred to the Delaware County Jail. According to court documents, Sweet told one friend last Friday that he “drugged” his grandparents and he thought they were dead.

Authorities said autopsies were conducted Monday, but the results have not been released.
